When Stress Speaks – Listen!
April 29th, 2008
Have you ever realized that you’ve been snappy for a few days without really realizing it?
Did you ever notice that you’d been feeling down and hadn’t been eating right for days, even weeks?
Have you ever been too annoyed or frustrated even to exercise, gave yourself a day off from it, and then discovered that one day off had elapsed into several?
Sometimes stress creeps up sneakily and we don’t notice its effect until it’s too late. When you let stress impact your lifestyle, it’s a sign that stress is winning, and that’s not good for anyone. There are warning signs that you can watch out for, so you can nip stress in the bud.
You just need to listen to your body. Look for the following signs:
• Muscle tension and headaches
• Loss of sexual appetite
• Unusual digestive problems
• Insomnia
• Feelings of anxiety, sadness, anger, frustration
There are many additional physical signs that stress is taking over. If your body suddenly seems to a little out of whack, there’s a good chance these symptoms are stress-related. Stress increases your susceptibility to colds and flu, causes skin breakouts and, given enough time, can even cause rapid weight loss or weight gain.
When your body reacts to stress in these ways, it can mean you’re not dealing well with your stress from a mental standpoint.
So if your body starts waving flags at you, what should you do? Ask yourself what’s bothering you. Don’t write off the little things! They can add up and cause major problems with stress.
Take some quiet time to think about what the source of your stress is. Sometimes just recognizing it is enough. Other times, you may need to work through issues that are more serious and perhaps seek outside assistance.
Whatever you do, make sure you maintain a proper diet and regular exercise routine. These are the two most effective ways to manage physical stress.
And never beat yourself up over being stressed out, but make sure you recognize stress and pinpoint the cause.
