When Stress Speaks – Listen!

April 29th, 2008

stress

Have you ever realized that you’ve been snappy for a few days without really realizing it?

Did you ever notice that you’d been feeling down and hadn’t been eating right for days, even weeks?

Have you ever been too annoyed or frustrated even to exercise, gave yourself a day off from it, and then discovered that one day off had elapsed into several?

Sometimes stress creeps up sneakily and we don’t notice its effect until it’s too late. When you let stress impact your lifestyle, it’s a sign that stress is winning, and that’s not good for anyone. There are warning signs that you can watch out for, so you can nip stress in the bud.

You just need to listen to your body. Look for the following signs:

• Muscle tension and headaches
• Loss of sexual appetite
• Unusual digestive problems
• Insomnia
• Feelings of anxiety, sadness, anger, frustration

There are many additional physical signs that stress is taking over. If your body suddenly seems to a little out of whack, there’s a good chance these symptoms are stress-related. Stress increases your susceptibility to colds and flu, causes skin breakouts and, given enough time, can even cause rapid weight loss or weight gain.

When your body reacts to stress in these ways, it can mean you’re not dealing well with your stress from a mental standpoint.

So if your body starts waving flags at you, what should you do? Ask yourself what’s bothering you. Don’t write off the little things! They can add up and cause major problems with stress.

Take some quiet time to think about what the source of your stress is. Sometimes just recognizing it is enough. Other times, you may need to work through issues that are more serious and perhaps seek outside assistance.

Whatever you do, make sure you maintain a proper diet and regular exercise routine. These are the two most effective ways to manage physical stress.

And never beat yourself up over being stressed out, but make sure you recognize stress and pinpoint the cause.

How to Deal with Stress Effectively

April 22nd, 2008

Stress happens to everyone. Some deal with it well because they have mastered the art of coping. Others fall victim to the effects of stress, which usually manifests through moodiness and negativity. However, stress that is dealt with poorly can also have physical effects and can lead to serious illness.

How do you deal with stress?

To examine how you deal with stress, think about how you’ve coped with difficult or trying situations. Compare how you stand up to the little things against how you deal with life’s big blows.

Life’s big stresses are completely unavoidable. When we lose someone we love, or face trauma or disaster, stress is inevitable. It’s important to recognize when we are going through a struggle. Talking about it helps a lot, but it’s also important to try and maintain as regular a routine as possible. Remember to eat well and don’t quit exercising. These basic components of life are what keep us going.

Little stresses sometimes do the most damage. They are those things nobody knows we’re going through. A good example is a bad day, one of those days where everything just takes the wrong turn. You misplace your keys and are late for work, you spill coffee all over your shirt before an important meeting, miss a deadline, forget a promise you made, burn dinner. By the end of the day, you’re at your wit’s end.

It helps to step back and say: I’m having a stressful day. An even better approach is to keep telling yourself the day will get better, and believe it. Try to shake it off, but if you can’t, just remember it’s only one day and there’s always tomorrow!

Whole Body Wellness Minimizes Stress

April 15th, 2008

When your whole body is at an optimum level of health, you can better fight the physical, mental, and emotional effects of stress.

Stress wears you down, and if your body is strong, it will be harder for stress to get the best of you. Whole body wellness means a healthy state of mind, a body that’s in shape, and an overall sense of well-being. Even spiritual health can come into play.

Balance is the key! Feeling centered and grounded is extremely beneficial to maintaining whole body wellness. Take care of your mind through positive thinking and wellness affirmations. Mantras, chants and meditations are extremely effective at building mental health. These will keep your attitude positive and you mind focused and clear.

Your body must be in good shape for you to achieve whole body wellness. There is a huge selection of exercise methods available to you, so be sure to choose something you enjoy and will practice willingly on a regular basis.

Spiritual balance does not have to tie into religion or faith, although it certainly can. It is the state of being connected and feeling whole.

Together, mental, physical and spiritual balance work to help you achieve an ultimate and balanced state of health. In this condition, your experience with stress will be greatly minimized. There’s no reason to let stress adversely affect your health. If you’re healthy to begin with, stress simply won’t win.

Work it Out: Stress and Exercise

April 8th, 2008

One of the best ways to fight stress is to maintain your body through physical exercise.
The stronger your body, and the greater its endurance, the easier it is to fight off stress and illness.

That’s why regular exercise is a major part of fighting stress. An exercise program does not have to be excruciating and it shouldn’t be exhausting. After a session of proper exercise, you’ll feel energetic, relaxed, and balanced. You should work your body muscles but also focus on increasing your heart rate.

In fact, along with keeping a balanced diet, exercise is one of the greatest things you can do for your overall health. When you exercise regularly, you enjoy more energy, greater strength, and less of the tension that stress causes in the body’s muscular tract.

There are many forms of beneficial exercise, so working out does not have to be a drag. Chances are, there’s something out there that you’ll love doing. Don’t be afraid to try a variety of exercises before settling on the one that’s right for you.

Many people join gyms, but walks and hikes are great forms of exercise, and they’re completely free! You may think you’re not into sports, but how you do feel about dancing? Turn up the music and get in shape! Yoga, Pilates and Tai Chi are exercise methods that originated in the East and they are extremely beneficial for mind-body health and wellness.

So get out there and find the exercise routine that’s right for you, and don’t forget to stick to it!

Mental and Emotional Stress Signs

April 1st, 2008

Stress can cause strange behaviors.

Some people lash out while others turn inward. Each of us deals with stress in our own way, but one thing is the same for all of us: stress has a serious impact on our mental and emotional health and behavior.

When you’re under stress, it’s unlikely that you’ll be in a good mood about it. Negative emotions and actions are often the result of stress. Serious negative actions can be the result of long-term stress. That’s why taking care of your mental state and managing your own attitude is healthy and beneficial for yourself and others.

At best, stress may cause general moodiness, easily triggered agitation and restlessness. An otherwise cheery person may become short-tempered and irritable when they’re under the heavy weight of stress. The greater the stress, the greater the impact on a person’s attitude.
Being unable to relax, feeling edgy and overwhelmed are all signs of detrimental stress.

Stress can also lead to severe mental and emotional health problems, such as depression and anxiety. When these escalate, medical attention may be necessary. So, it’s important to combat stress it in its early stages, and practice a lifestyle that is conductive to stress
management.

The key to managing stress is getting and staying in balance.
